Aleksey Leonidovich Bobrusov
Aleksey Leonidovich Bobrusov (born April 25, 1954, Moscow) is a graphic artist, painter, etcher, and illustrator who has also gained recognition as a master of ex libris. His works are held in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, as well as in private collections in Russia, the UK, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, China, the USA, Turkey, and Japan.
Biography
Father - Fishbein Leonid Davidovich (1909–2010), architect, veteran of the Great Patriotic War; mother - Bobrusova Tatyana Mikhailovna (1910–1998).
In 1972, he graduated from the Moscow Secondary Art School named after V.I. Surikov. From 1972–1974 he attended the Correspondence University of Arts, and from 1975–1980 studied at the Moscow Polygraphic Institute (Professors A. D. Goncharov, A. V. Vasnetsov).
Artistic Work
Bobrusov’s ex libris works offer admirers of printed graphics, collectors, artists, and art historians an opportunity to view the bookplate as part of the artist’s easel works and as a way to "work out" a part of a large composition within a small format, personalizing details.
Eight of Bobrusov’s bookplates are in the collection of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, within the ex libris collection of the graphic arts department. These are included in a body of works from the 20th–21st centuries that represent an era when the ex libris lost its utilitarian purpose and is now regarded as a collectible small-format graphic. Artistic techniques, etching explorations, printing methods, and the subject matter of the artist’s works are of particular interest in this context.
