Shutov Sergey Alekseevich
Sergey Alekseevich Shutov (born October 16, 1955, Potsdam) is a contemporary Russian artist.
Biography
He was born on October 16, 1955, in Potsdam, in the family of a teacher and a military officer. In 1956, the family moved from the GSVG deployment back to Moscow. He graduated from Moscow school No. 91, where he studied in the same class as M. Gnedovsky. He did not receive a formal art education. In the 1970s, in collaboration with Arkady Slavorosov (Guru), he wrote the well-known manifesto of Moscow hippies—the text "Kanon".
From 1975-78, he worked as a loader, assembler, and laboratory assistant at the State Museum of Oriental Art; in 1978, at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. In the late 1970s—early 1980s, he gave lectures at the Moscow Planetarium and worked at the zoo.
In 1978, he joined the Moscow City Committee of Graphic Artists and began participating in the spring and autumn exhibitions at M. Gruzinskaya 28, Moscow. In 1986, he organized his first solo exhibition "In Memory of Daniil Kharms" at the Mayakovsky Museum and participated in the famous 17th Youth Exhibition, where he became one of the most prominent representatives of the "new wave".
He was one of the residents of the famous art squat on Furmanniy Lane. In 1987, he joined several independent artist associations—the amateur "Hermitage", the Leningrad Club of Mayakovsky's Friends, Academy of Various Arts (Moscow-Leningrad), becoming its "first academician". In 1989, he headed the graphic art department at the Free Academy (Moscow).
In 1987, as an actor and artist (together with M. Gaukhman-Sverdlov), he worked on the set of the cult film "Assa" (director S. Solovyov), and for the premiere in 1988 organized the ASSA Art Rock Parade at the MELZ Cultural Center.
In 1988, he was represented at the first Moscow Sotheby's auction, after which he was invited for solo exhibitions in Paris, Glasgow, and New York, as well as presented at major shows of unofficial Soviet art in Europe and the USA.
In the late 1980s—early 1990s, he worked at the intersection of painting, music, performance, video, and new media: participated in concerts of the "Pop-Mechanics" group (from 1986), released the music disc "1988" (1988), authored shorts and most bumpers for "Pirate Television" (1989—1992). Together with T. Novikov, recorded and performed the soundtrack for the first screening of the restored version of the film "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari".
In 1992, he created Russia's first multimedia installation—"Sensory Experiences". At the same time, he founded and headed the Institute of Art Technology, organized Russia's first video art exhibition "DoubleCITY" (1993), and headed practical workshops at the Moscow Art New Media Lab (from 1994).
In 1994, he hosted the radio show Shutov Assembly (named after Brian Eno’s album dedicated to S. Shutov) as a DJ on station 106.8. He worked as a VJ at the club "Ptuch", introducing this profession in Russia.
In the 2000s, he created several large-scale multimedia installations, including "Abacus" (2001) at the Venice Biennale, "Hydrangea Carpet" (2003), and "Apokatastasis Now" (2006). In 2002, he was nominated for the State Prize.
In 2015, for Arsenal in Nizhny Novgorod, he created his largest work "Nesterov's Loop" (10x8 m).
He lives and works in Moscow.
