Igor Anatolyevich Palmin
Igor Anatolyevich Palmin (January 7, 1933, Stalingrad – November 2, 2025) was a Soviet and Russian photographer, cinematographer, journalist, and researcher of Russian avant-garde. He is known as the author of series on modernist architecture and as a chronicler of 'Other Art.' He was awarded the State Prize of Russia in literature and art (2003).
Biography
Igor Palmin was born on January 7, 1933 in Stalingrad (now Volgograd).
He graduated from the Faculty of Geology at Voronezh State University in 1955.
From 1958 to 1964, he studied at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in the part-time cinematography department.
Starting in 1958, he worked as a TV cameraman in Voronezh.
From 1962 to 1967, he was a cinematographer at the Laboratory of Scientific and Applied Photography and Cinematography of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
From 1967 to 1971, he worked as a producer-cinematographer of scientific films and editor of the science department at Central Television.
Since 1966, he began engaging in photography, working on a series of portraits of 'unofficial' artists and other representatives of 'alternative culture.'
Since 1971, he worked as a photographer in the publishing houses "Iskusstvo," "Soviet Artist," and "Soviet Writer."
From 1980, he began to work on architectural themes.
In the early 2000s, he was a staff photographer at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.
Palmin's path towards architectural subjects started with reproducing project graphics by Soviet avant-garde architects of the 1920s. Architecture, as an independent theme, took shape during his work for the book 'Russian Modern' by E. Borisova and G. Sternin.
Primarily relying on his eye, Palmin subconsciously controlled the visible with the meaning he was accustomed to extracting by studying drawings. He recognized the priority of the object over the photographer.
Palmin sees the main specific feature of photography as an art in its documentary quality, its ability to reliably fix reality. The possibility of immortalizing the moment — what first captivated him in photography — remains its greatest virtue.
The artistic life of the times of symbolism, modernism, futurism, and constructivism is researched and documented by the master through architecture. His photographs are free from mannerisms or attempts to develop a distinctive authorial style. They feature direct 'facade' viewpoints, lack imprecise angles, or active methods of retouching negatives or prints.
Despite using a wide range of modern equipment, optics, chemistry, etc., Palmin's photographs always look as the human eye sees. He considers this 'honest photography,' which he strives for.
Igor Palmin sees himself first and foremost as a 'book' photographer. The results of his work have been published in dozens of art books and journals in Russia and abroad.
He was awarded the State Prize in Literature and Art (2003) for the books 'Russian Modern' and 'Russian Neoclassicism.'
He passed away on November 2, 2025, at the age of 92.
