German Igorevich Vinogradov

Born in 1957 in Moscow. From 1976 to 1983, he studied at the architecture department of the Moscow Institute of Land Management Engineers. From 1984 to 1986, he was part of the group "Kindergarten" (A. Ivanov, G. Vinogradov, N. Filatov, A. Reuter). Since 1987, he participated in the "Hermitage" group. In 1987-89, he joined Boris Yukhananov in the group "Suffix ChK." In 1989, together with N. Pshenichnikova, he formed the group "Wine and Bread." In 1990, he founded the "Gribond" gallery. In 1994, created the group “KWAKUUM” (together with V. Melnikov and A. Kravchenko). Member of the City Committee of Graphic Artists since 1986. Member of the International Federation of Artists (IFA) since 1991. In the late 2000s, Vinogradov founded the group “Bunches of Vinogradovsky,” which included former members of the band "Zvuki Mu": Alexander Lipnitsky, Alexey Bortnichuk, Pavel Khotin, Alexander "Fagot" Alexandrov, as well as Dmitry Karabut. He also took part in the band "OtZvuki Mu."
Originator of mystical art in contemporary Russia.
Author of three BIKAPO Consciousness Manifestos.
Since 1984, he regularly held the BIKAPONIA Mystery of the Celestial Forest using the BIKAPO environment composed of a vast number of authorial sound sculptures. He was the first in modern Russia to introduce fire, water, and other primal elements as an essential part of mysteries conducted in closed spaces. Some sound sculptures operate on fire, water, and air. He performed over 2,000 mysteries in Russia, Europe, the USA, and Canada.
Under the influence of Porfiry Ivanov's system, he created distinctive forms of creative work, incorporating cold, snow, cold-water pouring, and dipping in ice holes as integral parts. For example, poetry readings from an ice hole, “Aerosleds,” living monuments to Porfiry Ivanov.
Author of performances involving the burning of land art objects by Nikolai Polissky, such as "Media-Tower," "Baikonur" (March 5, 2006), and "Hyperboloid Cooling Tower" ("Volcano") (February 18, 2012) in the Nikola-Lenivets Park.
In 2010, together with 87 other artists, he signed an open letter to the President of Russia in defense of Andrei Erofeev and Yuri Samodurov.
On February 1, 2012, at minus 27 degrees, he performed the world's highest water-pouring (cold dousing) on the 66th floor of the Federation Tower in Moscow City.
He died of a stroke on February 25, 2022, in Moscow.

What is it? Musical concert, performance, magical action, mystery? Likely all at once. When present at such a concert and watching all these elegant, glittering, vibrating, swinging and spinning structures, German's somnambulistic movements and his shamanic dance with a tambourine, one perceives first the mystical aspect of what is happening. The fantastic lighting enhances this effect.

In the context created by Vinogradov, pipes, sheets of iron, metal machine parts, and turbine engines, having lost their functional attribution, are unexpectedly transformed from technical objects into something natural and spontaneous. It is metallic ITURI (huge tropical forest in equatorial Africa), living by its own laws. Yet, it is the artist himself who set these laws, he is the priest of the world he created.

Some of the artists presented here have been influential figures on the Moscow youth culture scene for many years.
In the early 1980s, German Vinogradov was a member of the group “Kindergarten.” This art collective inhabited a vacant kindergarten until they had to leave in 1986. In the action "Music Room," Vinogradov brought together a wide variety of discarded items in unusual orchestral forms, making them sound for the audience. By simple means, he was able to create a highly poetic presentation of the "Son et Lumiere" type, using, for example, long iron strips as a gong, a children's bathtub as a drum, and pocket flashlights, directed through rotating kitchen sieves, and crackling lights for a ghostly illumination. In Bern, he decorated his multimedia happening with grass, reeds, and pebbles from the banks of the Aare River near the venue.
