Critic

Just as there never was a Phidias in Moscow, so there won’t be a Jasper Johns: Avdey Ter-Oganyan’s project to beautify the capital is too utopian. Not because his proposal to hang Jasper Johns’ Flag painting on the flagpole of the pompous U.S. embassy building frightened the ambassador. On the contrary, such an extravagant and unprecedented idea in global exhibition practice amused them. All the more so since the famous work is not parodic in relation to its original. As early as 1958, French critic Pierre Restany noted that Johns cleverly used painting to earn the right to exhibit the actual flag, “symbolizing the whole American myth, lifestyle, value hierarchy, and approaches to world politics.” As they used to say, Johns “challenged” painting. After 35 years, Ter-Oganyan wished to literally realize this metaphor—to subject the encaustic painting of the famous pop artist to the test of a rainy Moscow autumn. There was no point even asking the painting's owner, Mr. Leo Castelli. Only one thing remained: to copy. By repainting Jasper Johns and other genius modernists, Ter-Oganyan puts himself in the position of a "post-historical" artist. For him, all these precious pieces, viable only in the saline solution of museum halls, are a new classic—passionately loved, yet endlessly distant and alien. His involuntary profanation of Jasper Johns' masterpiece is not an attempt to insult or dethrone the master, but a result of almost classically naive and reasonable understanding of art—when it was not yet an appendage of personality, not a symbol of some authorial position or a “challenge” to anyone, but simply depicted gods and decorated cities. But one cannot deny that in his desire to hoist the banner on the U.S. embassy himself is also a fair share of mischievous ambition of a provincial parvenu, a stray and an outcast who broke into Moscow and—give him time—will conquer New York, too.
