Kishev Mukhadin Ismailovich

He was born in the village of Chegem-2, near the city of Nalchik, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria. His father, Ismail Khazretovich Kishev, died in the Battle of Stalingrad in 1943. His mother, Marusya Isufovna Kisheva, raised him alone and supported his dream of becoming an artist in the difficult postwar years. The artist's first exhibition took place at the age of eleven in the school library, featuring portraits of Russian writers Dostoevsky, Gogol, and others. The exhibition was organized by school librarian Zoya Elgarova. At thirteen, Mukhadin began attending an art club led by talented teacher Andrei Lukich Tkachenko at the House of Pioneers in Nalchik, walking fourteen kilometers each Sunday to attend. He completed secondary school in his native village.

In 1958, he entered the Krasnodar Art College, and then the Kuban State University, Faculty of Art and Graphics, graduating with honors in 1965. Concurrently with his university studies, he completed flight courses at the Krasnodar Aeroclub (Enem).

After graduating in 1965, Kishev worked at the Art Fund of Kabardino-Balkarian Republic. In the first 20 years of his creative activity, he worked in monumental art, executing projects in fresco, mosaic, bas-relief, and inlay in cities such as Zheleznovodsk, Anapa, Pyatigorsk, and Rostov-on-Don. There were many state commissions from the USSR Ministry of Health. In 1973, Kishev was admitted to the USSR Artists' Union. He made several professional trips to Poland, Germany, Italy, Nepal, and India. From 1988–1991, he was the artistic director of young professional artists of Russia at the "Goryachiy Klyuch" and "Baikal" artists’ residences, using the free atmosphere of perestroika to encourage artists to work with great freedom. There, he set an example for a generation of talented artists now exhibiting worldwide. In 1993, he was accepted into the International Union of Artists. From 1994 to 1998, by invitation of the renowned Chisenhale Studios, he worked in London. He visited Belgium, Gambia, Senegal, France, Scotland. From 1972 to 2000 alone, Kishev visited 18 countries for creative work. In 1997, he was elected a member of the Association of Russian Artists in London. Over his more than 55-year career, he participated in around 80 group exhibitions and more than 40 solo exhibitions.

From 1998 to the end of his life, he lived and worked in Spain, at his studio in Los Caños de Meca, Cadiz. He died April 12, 2025 in Spain, where he is also buried.

He was Honored Artist of Russia, People's Artist of Kabardino-Balkaria. His paintings are in museums and private collections worldwide. For many years, he lived not only in Russia but also in Spain. An art home (gallery) in Kabardino-Balkaria is named after him. In December, the republic celebrated his 85th anniversary.

Kishev's life and art represent a fusion of East and West, with Spain making a significant impact on his oeuvre. Kishev explored different techniques including oil on canvas and monotype on paper, masterfully using color and light. Kishev painted widely, his works covering a broad range of themes appearing in recurring series, such as: "Destinies," "Cosmic Space," "Homeland," "The Artist's Voice," "Nostalgia for Nature," and others, where the main goal is to bridge the real and the abstract.

Kishev's paintings can be found in the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Federation Ministry of Culture Foundation, the Art Foundation of the Russian Federation, and the Gorbachev Foundation. The Kabardino-Balkarian Museum of Fine Arts named after A.L. Tkachenko in Nalchik houses a large collection of his Soviet-era works, as do many other museums in Russia: Krasnodar, Tobolsk, Maykop, Makhachkala, Kislovodsk, etc. His works are also found in the Ateneo Collection in Madrid and the Kolodzei Art Foundation’s collection in the USA. Over 300 of Kishev's works are in private collections in Russia, the UK, Spain, Germany, Iceland, Poland, Finland, France, the USA, Latin America, Brazil, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, former Soviet republics, and other countries globally.
