The glass-bronze sculpture "Maternité" executed and published by the Cristallerie Daum in Nancy reflects the close collaboration between the artist and the manufactory, which began in the mid-1960s and lasted for almost 20 years. Dalí discovered that the translucent material properties of glass, especially the soft-plastic or flowing molten colored Pâte de verre glass, were the ideal medium for his surrealistic expression of metamorphosis. In total, he created 21 models for execution at Daum, mostly in editions of only 150-220 copies, making him one of the most creative and significant artists ever to collaborate with the glass manufactory. Violet Pâte de verre (Pâte de Cristal) glass and bronze sculpture, 1978, signed (or inscribed) "Dalí", marked "DAUM FRANCE" and numbered "54/200". Inscribed and titled by the editor and manufacturer Daum Nancy, France, on the original wooden base.
