The company’s name was misleading, as it had no relation to any royal family and never actually manufactured anything. The only correct part of the company designation was O.H.G., since the company simply traded attractive decorative porcelain items (fireplace sets, vases, etc.) that were specially marked for this company. Around 1961 Royal Porzellan-Manufaktur opened a subsidiary in the USA in the form of a small porcelain shop on Fifth Avenue in New York. Unable to overcome the ever-widening gap between the styles demanded by U.S. customers and the products supplied by German manufacturers, the subsidiary closed after only three years. Meanwhile Royal Porzellan-Manufaktur O.H.G. managed to secure a small niche in the German market, supplying small shops with mid- to high-end decorative items. Not that the company became famous or very successful, but it did manage to survive a rather costly mistake on the U.S. market. The development of the porcelain market in Germany between 1960 and 1970 is difficult to explain. In short, this period saw not only the collapse of the standard mail-order business but also a general change in the product range. This was the main phase of the so-called “Medieval Modern” era, based on a combination of design and ceramics. Typical porcelain products lost much of their standing, and many small porcelain-related companies were forced to close. This development led R.P.M. to switch market segments, concentrating on cheap gifts, souvenirs and promotional items. On January 1, 1973 it merged with a similar firm, Porzellanmanufaktur Klaus Cutik, resulting in Royal Porzellan (Manufaktur) G.m.b.H., which ceased operations in 1996.
