Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Viktor Viktorovich Ageev was born in 1939 in the village of Traktornaya Baza, Rugozersky District, Karelian ASSR. In 1959 he graduated from the Ryazan Art School, and in 1965 from the Department of Monumental Painting of the Moscow Higher School of Industrial Art (Stroganov School). He taught at the Ryazan Art School from 1965 to 1973. Since 1975, he has been a member of the Union of Artists of Russia. He has been a regular participant in art exhibitions since 1972. The artist’s monumental works are located in Ryazan, Yalta, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, and other cities in the country. His easel works are held in the collections of the State S.A. Yesenin Museum-Reserve, the Ryazan Art Museum, art galleries in Smolensk, Kaliningrad, Lovech (Bulgaria), as well as in Russian and foreign private collections.
Viktor Ageev is an artist of many facets who has made a vivid mark in drawing, painting, and monumental-decorative art. He was never satisfied with achieved results, always searching for new ways of artistic expression. The exhibition traces several stages in the artist’s creative journey, distinguished both by the themes of his works and by stylistic techniques.
Viktor Viktorovich mastered the Stroganov system of drawing exceptionally well. As a student of such recognized masters as F.F. Voloshko and V.F. Bordichenko, he managed to strike a balance between the strictness of constructive form and keen attention to the character of nature. Drawing has always been one of the artist’s favorite techniques. His graphite pencil portraits of contemporaries go beyond mere sketches, acquiring independence and the convincing strength of character.
A special place in the artist’s work is occupied by the theme of traditional art and the creative continuity of folk craftsmen. Genre scenes and portraits painted by V. Ageev in the 1970s–2000s are dedicated to the Shoe-Making Songstresses of Sapozhkovo, the lace-makers of Mikhailov, and the ceramicists of Skopin. The theme of generations is continued in a series of works created by the artist over the past decade, dedicated to members of his family.
In his landscape painting, lyrical images of Central Russian nature coexist organically with the brightly colored views of Lake Baikal. V. Ageev devotes great attention to the expressive appearance of the old streets of Ryazan, Kasimov, Kolomna, as well as Smolensk—the city of his childhood.
After 2002, when Viktor Viktorovich's world was confined to the space of his studio, the genre of interior became one of the main trends in his work, revealing the artist’s feelings, thoughts, and dreams. Light, both natural and artificial, took on special expressiveness in his works, conveying a wide emotional range.
The exhibition at the Ryazan Art Museum includes more than eighty works. They represent Viktor Ageev as a multi-talented master and a courageous man who, despite life’s circumstances, retained optimism and faith in the human spirit.
